A Vaughan man was charged in connection with a crash in Toronto that left a bicyclist in hospital with a severed leg.
At about 2:30 a.m. Nov. 14, police were sent to the Dovercourt Road and Argyle streets area, between Dundas Street and Queen Street West in the west-end of Toronto’s downtown, after receiving a report of a hit-and-run.
The officers found a cyclist bleeding from his right leg. The cyclist, a Toronto man in his mid-30s, had been pinned against a pole after he was backed into by a cab.
The cyclist was taken to a downtown hospital but doctors were unable to re-attach his leg. He was initially listed with life-threatening injuries but is now expected to survive, Toronto traffic services Sgt. Tim Burrows said Friday.
The cyclist remained in hospital at press time and will undergo more surgery, he added.
A cab was seen leaving the area after the collision, south on Dovercourt, police said. Police had linked a Beck taxi with damage to its rear trunk, bumper and tail light to the crash.
Police also reportedly received a 911 call indicating a cab driver was involved in an incident in the area and were told a cyclist tried to rob the cabbie and that the driver had been assaulted.
Police have reportedly determined a robbery did not take place.
Sultan Ahmed, 38, of Maple is charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failing to stop at the scene of an accident with bodily harm, obstructing police, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
The charges have not been proven.
