It was a heart attack that felled Giuseppe Pio.

Mr. Pio, 49, of Toronto, became grist for the rumour mill at a Woodbridge plaza last Friday after he collapsed in the parking lot of a Tim Hortons near the intersection of Hwy. 7 and Whitmore Road.

Mr. Pio was engaged to be married, had a supportive family and had been fighting flu-like symptoms all week, Det. Sandra Staley said.

An autopsy conducted on his body revealed he also had a hole inside his chest caused by a massive heart attack, she said.

The blood seen by a number of witnesses on Mr. Pio’s head while they tried to get him medical help was not the result of an attack, according to Det. Staley.

“His head had no injury,” she said. “There was no fracture.”

Most believe Mr. Pio fell from a small ledge near where he was found.

At the scene last Friday, York Regional Police Insp. Bruce West referred to the incident as an “unwitnessed collapse.”
