Free agent Orr resigns with Nationals for 2009 seasonPete Orr is back in the game for the 2009 season.
The 29-year-old free agent signed a minor league deal last week with the Washington Nationals organization for the 2009 season. Orr, who joined Washington as a free agent last season after three seasons with the Atlanta Braves, declared his free agency earlier this off-season.
A utility infielder who was promoted to the National League club in July, Orr batted .253 in 75 at-bats for the Nationals.
The Newmarket Baseball Association graduate has a .263 career batting average and has appeared in 320 career games.
Orr is on the Team Canada roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic in March.
Hurricanes seek solution to struggling Stouffville SpiritThe Newmarket Hurricanes have had their hands full with the Stouffville Spirit this season.
In fact, two of the three wins recorded by the Spirit in an otherwise disastrous Ontario Junior Hockey League season have been at the expense of the Hurricanes, including one victory in a shootout.
Newmarket gets a chance to claim its first win against Stouffville when the teams clash today at 3:30 p.m. at the Ray Twinney Complex in Newmarket.
The Spirit is mired in last place in the eight-team Central Division.
Sutch makes grade for U-17 Ontario teamRight winger Gregg Sutch of Newmarket is among 22 players named last week to the Team Ontario roster for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Port Alberni, B.C.
Sutch, a first-round pick by the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting in May’s draft, has one goal and four assists in 22 games in his rookie season with the Sting.
As a member of the York Simcoe Express minor midgets last season, Sutch scored 52 goals among 81 points.
The tournament starts Dec. 29 and includes five Canadian regional squads and five international teams.
