Our region’s sustainability strategy is as good as gold.
York Region received a gold Whole City Award at the UN-endorsed Liveable Communities awards earlier this month.
The LivComs recognize the cultural, political, economic, geographic and climatic environment of each community.
“It’s regarded as the ‘Green Oscars’ of the international environmental community,” regional chairperson and CEO Bill Fisch said.
Each contender had to make a presentation emphasizing their commitment to enhancement of the landscape, heritage management, environmentally sensitive Practices, community sustainability, healthy lifestyles and planning.
York Region won in the category for municipalities larger than 750,000 people, finishing ahead of cities such as Johannesburg, South Africa and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia this year.
Past winners of the UK-based awards include Chicago, Honolulu and Dongguan, China, where the 2008 ceremony took place.
