Hat-trick helps Waxers rout struggling Stouffville Spirit

Giancarlo Iuorio scored three goals and added one assist while Bowman Webster added a pair of goals and one assist to ignite the Markham Waxers their fifth straight win with a 9-2 drubbing of the Stouffville Spirit in Ontario Junior Hockey League Central Division action Thursday in Stouffville.

The Waxers jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one period and erupted with four unanswered goals in the second frame to take a commanding 8-1 advantage.

Shane Ferguson, David Titanic, Jordan Custoreri and Matthew Meszaros added single tallies. Kody Vaisanen collected three assists.

Tied for first place with the Hamilton Red Wings, the Waxers outshot the cellar-dwelling Spirit 34-27.

Sporting a record of 14 wins, one overtime win, two shootout wins and eight losses, the Waxers were to play the St. Michael’s Buzzers yesterday and will host the Cobourg Cougars in a rare Thursday night game Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

AAA Midget Waxers edge Ajax-Pickering 3-2

Rick Czapka scored a goal and added one assist to propel the Markham midget AAA Waxers to a 3-2 road win over host Ajax-Pickering in Ontario Minor Hockey Association action Wednesday.

Tyler Sikura and Shayne Welker each added single tallies for the Waxers, now 9-1-1 on the season.

Connor Fitzsimmons collected one assist.

The Waxers play in Oshawa tonight and host Clarington Sunday at Markham Village Arena at 8 p.m.

Swimmers make waves

Justin McNamara and Christian Ng highlighted a contingent of competitors fro the Markham Aquatic Club at the Swim International competition in Brantford by swimming their way to a total of 14 gold medals.

McNamara, 10, claimed eight gold medals (200-metre breaststroke, 200m back, 200m free, 100m back, 200m individual medley, 100m free and two relay events) in his male 10 and under age group division and Ng, 11, brought home six (200m breast, 100m fly, 200m free, 200m fly, 200m individual medley and 100m free).

In total, the club collected 46 medals including 22 gold, seven silver and 17 bronze.

In addition 27 swimmers succeeded in making provincial standards enabling them to compete at the Provincial Short Course competition being held next February in Napean.
