Church St. congregation dates back to 1841

Stouffville United Church will be celebrating Anniversary Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of the church this weekend.

Guest speaker Rev. Vicki Cousins will present the children’s time and the message, The Tree of Life.

The focus for the church is “Building Spirits! Building Lives!”

The service will be followed by a pot-luck lunch and time of fellowship.

Stouffville United’s rich history in the community dates back to it early roots in the Methodist Church.

In 1841, services were held in the old school house located on the site of the present church, on Church Street north of Main.  In later years the school was purchased and used as the official church building.

The school house was the home of services until 1872 when it was moved across the street, where it still stands at No. 17 and 19 Church Street, and a new brick building was erected.

In 1892, the sanctuary that exists today was built.  At various times the church was a part of a three-point charge with Bloomington and the Tenth Line congregation.

In 1925, the Methodist Church joined the church union and Stouffville United Church was officially formed.

Music has always been an important complement to the worship service. The pipe organ was donated in 1933 by the Button family in memory of Major and Mrs. John R. Button and the cathedral chimes were donated in 1950 by Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Watts in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. T. Boynton.

“Today, we are a busy church with Junior Youth Spirit Group (grades 6 to 8), and a Youth Spirit group of older youth who have a variety of activities not the least of which is their mission outreach – The Gregory Farm,” spokesperson Heather Andrews said.

There is a children worship service each Sunday preceded by a Junior Youth Spirit breakfast at 9:00 a.m.  Nursery is available during worship service.
